Gold Star Families Monument Groundbreaking Held Saturday

The Beebe City Council unanimously approved the construction of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument to be located at Veterans Monument Park on W. Dewitt Henry at N. Pecan. Hershel “Woody” Williams, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and designer of the monument attended the dinner held Friday night and the groundbreaking Saturday, Oct. 28th. Retired Marine Chief Warrant Officer 1 Hershel “Woody” Williams shared his experiences in WWII at the dinner. He served in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the 21st Marines, 3d Marine Division. He related how these experiences brought about the founding of the foundation to honor God Star Families. During the dinner, Mayor Mike Robertson gave Woody Williams a proclamation naming Oct. 28th as Woody Williams Day in Beebe. The mayor also announced that the city is pledging $10,000 for the project which cost $43,875. Bubba Beason, Jeff Marshall, and Ken Adams are the Honorary Board Members for the Beebe Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation. Committee members include Ken Adams and Chelsey Swindle, Gold Star Spouse. The purpose of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is to honor Gold Star Families, preserve the memory of the fallen, and stand as a reminder that Freedom is not free. A Gold Star family is a wife, husband, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather – etc. – of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States that sacrificed their life for our way of life and the American flag under which they served.
