What’s Left?

Yesterday I learned that our Beebe School District Superintendent Dr. Belinda Shook has announced that she will retire at the end of this school year. I was devastated for several reasons but the main two are: first – I think she has been a great superintendent and has our school district in great shape in a time when many districts throughout the state are having problems; second – I really wanted to try and get a swimming program in line before she left – whether that be just a program where our kids go to Harding or Cabot to use their pool so we could have a swim team or – and best yet – that we could have a local swimming pool available for our school kids to use in their physical education classes and even the college kids could use it for their PE classes – and have a swim team and the local people could also use the pool. This would be in the form of a community center located somewhere near the schools/college – preferably a joint effort between the city and school – if that is legal. Don’t know how that works yet – but I am working on that. Cabot schools use the pool at Veterans Park – which is located just across the street from the main building. I know that Dr. Shook – along with several people in the community, are interested in getting something like this if we can just figure out the financials. But I do want to express my appreciation to Dr. Shook for all her efforts on behalf of our schools and our students, teachers and staff. She has always gone above and beyond in her efforts to make things work out and make things better for our district. So, for now, we will just appreciate this final year of her leadership and hope that we get lots done between now and the end of the school year! School starts Monday, Aug. 14th. Open House is this Thursday, Aug. 10th, 4 – 7 p.m. I hope you all had a great summer. Let have a great fall! Go to your happy place! See you next week!
