What’s Left?

A week or so ago - or maybe a month - I lose track of time, I wrote about the school lunches for Paris school children. That’s Paris, France - not Paris, Arkansas. If you read that column it stated that in Paris, school children were served a five course lunch and the students have one hour for lunch. They, the Paris school system, even send home a card with suggestions as to what should be served for dinner that night considering what the kids had for lunch. Very different from here. The other night, I saw Jamie Oliver, a.k.a. “The Naked Chef” - he’s called that because he makes natural foods - start a food challenge in the so-called “most unhealthy” town in America. It was in West Virginia and the point was that Chef Oliver would come to the school and try to educate the children (and lunchroom ladies) on what was healthier foods for the kids. The show I saw was just a promotion for the real show which, I believe, will air on Friday night on HGTV. Anyway, just from the promo show, it looked like Chef Oliver was going to have an uphill battle with the kids and the lunchroom ladies. He only has one week, has to stay on budget and has to show that the kids like the food. It should be fun to watch and I believe that even though we have pretty good food - we don’t really know how nutritious is really is. I mean, how many vitamins have made it through the heavy processing that most of school food goes through? I remember when I was in high school in North Little Rock. I really didn’t like food but I can remember that the kids really liked the lunchroom food. I do remember smelling the rolls cooking each day. Our school had the best rolls!  But I don’t know if that was typical of schools back then. I think ours might have been exceptional.  I’m all for getting better - more wholesome- food for our kids! If the Chef Oliver thing goes well, it may start a lunchroom revolution across the nation. Wouldn’t that be something?
It’s Spring Break this week. It feels really funny for that not to mean anything to me. It used to be that we’d go on vacation or that my nieces would come stay with us some while they were on break - but now, they’re all grown up and in college and Spring Break is just another week. Sad.  I guess I could get some sort of activity together for my cats???
Well, when it’s Spring Break there’s one thing you know - spring is just around the corner - or two. The weather yesterday and today (Mon. & Tues.) was great and is what you like to see for the flowers and the fresh weeds coming up. But, as is always the case in Arkansas, we’ll still have some more cool weather off and on for a few weeks before the real spring temperatures take hold.
I hope you’re having a great week!
Go to your happy place!
See you next week!
