What’s Left?

Last week I attended my first Ark. Municipal League conference in Little Rock. It was strange to be at a large conference and it didn’t have anything to do with Ark. Press – as I have attended on several occasions. Anyway, first, it was good to just be doing something different and ready to learn new things. My class – Govt. 101 – was pretty interesting and it was held at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock. It was interesting to get away from Beebe for a little while and see how so many people live and work in other areas of the state. There were hundreds of people at the conference. I never heard exactly how many but at the banquet the first night – it looked like there were about 800-1,000 people present. The biggest thing I came away from the conference with is the importance of each of us – council members and citizens – to be civil to each other and to always treat each other with respect. That sounds elementary but just look at our recent presidential election. We want to get along with each other and get things done for our citizens. At the conference they emphasized that we – the city council and mayor – must also carry that demeanor of respect into executive session meetings, too. I know that our good group will do that. Go to your happy place. See you next week!
