Lady Badgers Victorious in Annual TournamentApr 10th, 2014 | By admin | Category: Sports
The Lady Badgers softball team co-hosted the annual Beebe/Cabot Softball Tournament held on March 29th in both Beebe and Cabot – with the Championship game being held in Cabot this year.
The Lady Badgers started the day off with the Lady Timber Wolves from Cedar Ridge and jumped on them from the very 1st inning, with the bats of Madelyn Poe, Calah Hill, Nikita Howell and Courtney Shepard, the Lady Badgers scored 9 runs in the 1st inning – 2 runs in the 2nd inning and added 2 more runs in the 3rd and final inning while completely dominating The Lady Timber Wolves on their way to a 13-0 victory. The Lady Badgers were never threatened, as Ellie Reaves dominated on the mound with 8 strikeouts – while only giving up a couple of hits in the run shortened contest.
In the Lady Badgers 2nd contest, they drew a tough Bryant team – but, as in their 1st game, jumped on the Lady Hornets quickly in the 1st inning behind the bats of Poe, Hill and Howell and scored 3 runs behind a 3 run RBI from Freshman Haley Dinapoli. Dinapoli’s hit was followed up by a ground out hit, which brought in Lady Badger Paige Sharp to end the inning, with the Lady Badgers firmly in control leading 4-0. Bryant scored their only run in the top of the 3rd inning making the score 4-1 Lady Badgers. Due to time constraints (tournament rules games can go no longer than 1:20) the Lady Badgers won after 4 innings of play. Ellie Reaves sparkled again with 6 strikeouts while only giving up 2 walks, 3 hits and the lone run. The win put the Lady Badgers in the Championship game against Brookland in Cabot.
In their 3rd and final game of the day – the Lady Badgers faced a tough Brookland Bearcat team that had beaten them a week earlier, 1-0 in extra innings. The game was just as tight as the week before, with the Lady Badgers scoring 1st – but the Lady Bearcats tied things up in the 4th inning and the score stayed knotted at 1-1 through 7 innings. The International run rule was put into effect in the 8th inning and both teams scored – making it 2-2. But – the Lady Badgers held strong in the top 9th inning and did not let the Brookland runners score. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Coach Chambers put MaKenzie Free on 2nd base to start the inning and the Lady Badgers moved her around to 3rd base – giving Madelyn Poe a chance to bring her in – which she did with a hit – thus winning the game and the tournament for the 3rd straight year in dramatic fashion. Ellie Reaves was again spectacular on the mound for the 3rd straight game – Ellie had 8 strikeouts, allowed 7 hits with only 2 walks. The Lady Badgers also had 7 hits in the contest. These two teams will tangle again on April 17th in Beebe at Gillam Fields beginning at 4:30 pm – in what should be another great softball game.
After the tournament, Coach Chambers stated, “ I’m very proud of our girls – this was the 3rd time in 2 years we have played Brookland – with them beating us in extra innings last week. We are two very evenly matched teams. In the 1st 2 games we hit the ball well against Cedar Ridge and Bryant and we didn’t quit against Brookland – we competed really well. Ellie did a really good job on the mound for us today. The wins move us 10-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.”
The Lady Badgers next home games will be a double header against Conference foe Wynne on April 15th at 4:30 p.m. at Gillam Field with the Brookland showdown 2 days later on the 17th.
Congratulations Lady Badgers In Your “3 Peat” In The Annual Tournament!
