What’s Left?

One bad thing about getting older is that almost every week, someone you know passes away. Well, this past week a former banker here in Beebe, Garland Kirkpatrick, passed away in Texas. Garland and his wife, Wilma, had moved to Texas in November of 2010 to be closer to their two daughters. Garland was always active in community affairs and was a tireless promoter of Beebe. Our prayers are with his wife, Wilma, and daughters, Marilyn and Carolyn - and friends and relatives.

On to other things. I am always amazed at the great variance in vocations and levels of success which Beebe area natives have achieved. This past week or so, I was informed by local historian, Richard White, that one of our own  played an important role in the movie, “American Hustle.” If you haven’t seen it, it is based on the ABSCAM FBI sting operation in the late 1970’s. I’m not going to tell you anymore because next week I will publish the story of the connection between a former Beebe area native and “American Hustle.”  The movie has been nominated for an Oscar - which aires this Sunday night. Also nominated for an Oscar from that movie in the categories:  best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best  original screenplay, best director, best costume design, and  best film editing. Lots of nominations!  I’ll have the story for you in next week’s Beebe News.

And the Olympics - they’re over now and it was an exciting two weeks - mostly. As I told you before, I’m not much on speed skating and bobsledding, curling and those other “weird” sports (in my opinion) but I loved the snowboarding, slopestyle snowboarding, downhill skiing,  and figure skating. It was fun to watch and I’m glad the U.S. got to bring back lots of medals! Go USA! And - best of all - there were no terrorist attacks!  I was watching Stephen Colbert’s show and he said now that the Sochi  Olympics are over, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin was going to burn the Sochi Olympic village  down to collect on the insurance. Funny!

My cats are ready for warm weather. So am I.

Go to your happy place.

See you next week.
