Badgers Drop Home Contest To Golden EaglesFeb 20th, 2014 | By admin | Category: Sports
Friday, February 14 - The Golden Eagles from Greene County Tech visited the Badgers Valentine’s night Friday, February 14th at Badger Arena for a 5 A East conference game. The Badgers were without the services of Center Zach Baker – who had injured his foot earlier in the week. (Zach is expected to be back on the squad when the team travels to Nettleton on Friday, February 21st)
Without the services of Baker – the Badgers knew it was going to be a tall order to beat the Golden Eagles – but the game must go on. The Badgers and Eagles were knotted up at 4-4 with 5:10 left in the 1st quarter when the Eagles began to pull away and led jumped out to a 10-4 lead with 3:17 remaining in the 1st quarter – but Austin Moore came up big with a 3-pointer at the 2:40 mark and the Badgers hit another short jumper at the 1:20 mark, bringing them to within one point at, 10-9. But the Golden Eagles hit a 3-point shot and held a 13-9 lead after the 1st quarter.
Austin Moore came out hot to start the 2nd quarter and hit two 3-point shots – the last coming at the 6:15 mark of the 1st half to tie the game at 15-15. The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter, but without the presence of Zack in the middle, the Eagles were able to take the lead back and stretch it out to a 27-19 lead with a minute remaining in the half – the Badgers were able to garner another basket before half and trailed 27-21 at halftime.
The 3rd quarter played out much like the first half – with the Eagles working the ball inside for easy scores and building a 35-24 lead with 3:54 remaining in the 3rd. The Badgers couldn’t answer the Eagles scoring – after two road wins already this week, the team was fatigued and fell behind 40-27 with 1:17 remaining in the 3rd quarter and trailed 43-29 after three quarters of play.
The Golden Eagles continued to pound it inside and led by 15 points, 48-33, with 5:30 minutes remaining in the game. Coach Marshall was only working with a six-man rotation throughout the game and they all became winded toward the end, falling behind 52-38 with 1:55 remaining in the contest and eventually falling by the score of 56-40 in the end. A much different game from when the Badgers traveled to Paragould just 3 weeks ago and were beaten by the Golden Eagles on a last second shot.
The Badgers were led in scoring by Tanner Chapman with 19 points, Austin Moore with 11 points and Hunter Akins with 6 points. The boys now stand at 9-12 overall and 6-4 in Conference play.
After the contest Coach Marshall stated, “ Greene County Tech play good defense throughout the game. Not having Zack was a huge factor in the game. Having played three games in four days, with one of those being in Blytheville, we had tired legs.
Austin played well for us in the 1st half – but in the second half we were really fatigued. There was no flow to the game tonight and our guys were just really tired.”
The Badgers last home game will be Thursday, February 27th for Senior Night, against a tough Paragould Ram team – come out and support the team as they fight for a spot in the State Championships.
