(Wynne) – The Badger baseball team visited the Wynne Yellowjackets for a pivotal Conference double header on Wednesday, May 8th and split with the ‘Jackets.

In the 1st game, 3 Badger pitchers were used to try and slow down the Yellowjackets offense. Jared Aschenbrenner started the game and pitched 2 1/3rd innings, Angus Denton and Justin Browning both came in for 2 innings a piece to end the game. They only allowed 7 hits, 2 base on balls and struck out 11 Yellowjacket batters in their effort – but were really hurt when the Badgers committed 4 errors in the 1st 2 1/3rd innings, while also allowing a homerun on their way to a 5-1 loss in the 1st game.

Than Kersey and Jon Underwood were the only Badgers able to get a hit in the 1st contest – driving in the Badgers lone run.

Wynne got on the board 1st with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning and a run in bottom of the 2nd inning – the Badgers lone run came in the top of the 3rd inning, but the Yellowjackets struck for 3 more runs in the bottom half of the inning – making the score 5-1. No more runs were generated by either team, leaving the final score 5-1 Yellowjackets in the 1st game.

The 2nd game started out with ace Brandon Stane on the mound for the Badgers and he did a superb job in shutting down the Yellowjackets the entire game. Brandon only allowed 5 hits, 3 base on balls and struck out 11 Wynne players along the way to a hard fought 1-0 win in the 2nd game.

Than Kersey, Jon Underwood, Byars Halford and Angus Denton all backed up Brandon at the plate with a hit a piece – driving in the Badgers lone run – but that run was enough to win the game.

The Badgers held the Yellowjackets scoreless throughout all 7 innings while scoring their run in the top of the 5th inning.

The win puts the Badger overall record at 17-9 and 9-5 in Conference play. They will play the White Hall Bulldogs in the 1st round of the State Tournament in Jonesboro at 2:30 on Thursday, May 9th.

Congratulations Badgers for making it to the State Tournament once again!
