What’s Left?

I was looking around town the other day and thinking about how much it has changed in the past several years.  I came to Beebe in 1968 and the only place to eat a burger was W.J.’s - a locally owned hamburger joint. It was really good! I loved their hamburgers and cheeseburgers. They put chopped up lettuce on their burgers - I’d never had that before. I also would occasionally put French fries on my burger.  It was a great place to go after school. And, of course, we had the state renowned Anderson’s. It was great for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The first chain restaurant we got here as I remember it was Pizza Hut. It was so popular when we first got it. I can’t remember what year that was - but shortly after that we got Kentucky Fried Chicken. We were thrilled to have those two fast-food restaurants. Then we got McDonalds and that was a huge deal! We had really arrived then. Shortly after that, we got Taco Bell and we were really excited about that. But during that time period - we lost Anderson’s to a fire. Another one was opened by Bruce Anderson’s daughter and it was great - but was only open for a few years. We’ve had several other restaurants - fish houses - come and go and we currently have two or three restaurants but we’ve had no more fast-food chains come to town since Taco Bell. I believe it might be time - when Walmart opens. I’ve heard that Burger King usually comes when you get a Walmart but have had no confirmation on that. We’ll just have to wait and see - but the eating scene has changed quiet a bit over the years. I still long for the time when we had Anderson’s and people from all over the state would come eat there. In fact, that is what I would tell people, “I live in Beebe - you know - where Anderson’s Restaurant is…”  I know you all miss it, too. It is good to reminisce.

Go to your happy place.

See you next week!
