The Beebe City Council met Monday night for their regular monthly meeting. They passed two ordinances, one amending the zoning map for 508 S. Fir Street from R-1 to R-2 (Ord. 2012-03) and approved Ord. 2012-04, an ordinance approving the change in zoning classification from C-2 to R-3 for Crestwood Drive for apartment construction. The council also approved a resolution to allow the mayor to execute a contract with Clarence Ross for cemetery services.
The council also heard a presentation from Jim Wakefield of Little Rock regarding possibly donating 6.1 acres located on Hwy. 64 W., formerly the home of Ervin L. and Opal Powers. The city is considering this donation although it would entail demolishing a home which is in poor condition and other stipulations of the donation. The council will take up the issue at the next regular meeting in February.
The council also heard from Jim Miller, regional general manager of Cobridge Communications, the local cable television provider. The company has been purchased by Fidelity and Miller was present at the council meeting asking the city to continue it’s contract with Cobridge under the new owner. The council agreed.
In other action, the council:
• Agreed to start using city credit cards for some purchases
• Approved the hiring of a janitor for 5 hours 2 times per week for the city hall, and
• Approved the addition of part-time help at the park for the concession stand and the equipment purchase - a nacho machine.
The mayor discussed with the council that the city is trying to get on the hazard mitigation plan of White County as it will allow the city to apply for FEMA help with flooding costs and reimbursements - which would help the city and the citizens who have suffered losses in recent and future flooding and other disasters.
