What’s Left?Dec 15th, 2011 | By admin | Category: Opinion
Are you at the Grinch point yet? You know - too much shopping, cooking, parties, etc. for this Christmas season. I’m not there yet because I haven’t done too much of the shopping, cooking, parties - yet. I guess I will have to do some but still - the added stress to my life just about tips the scales. But, I can’t complain - really - am I complaining? Anyway, I have enjoyed seeing the Christmas lights around town - even though we don’t have any on our house this year - probably for the first time. But we may put some up in the next few days. Hard to say. Like I’ve said before - if left to me - we might not have a tree. Speaking of trees. Our Christmas tree this year has big red birds - almost life size - actually just a bit bigger than a real Cardinal. They have tail feathers and really look pretty realistic. So……my cats, each night, take turns pulling one or two off the tree and trimming their tail feathers. At least they don’t tear the whole bird up and I can just move them up on the branches and hope that they don’t get attacked again. I’m not sure how smart that is because now that the cats know they have feathers, they may just jump up in the middle of the tree and get the birds anyway. Maybe I should be putting them on the very lowest branches so that the cats don’t wreck the whole tree trying to get to the birds. This morning (Wed.) there were two birds in the middle of the hallway. Tomorrow - who knows.
Tonight (Wed.) I’m going with my mom and a couple of other Beebe-ites to the Cirque du Soleil show at Verizon Arena. It will be fun. I’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil show before but I’ve heard that they are spectacular. I’ll let you know.
What do you think about the possible new legislation regarding cell phone use in vehicles? I know for now it is just the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) saying that is their recommendation. I heard that 3,100 people died last year in distraction related accidents. That doesn’t tell me that they were texting or talking but no matter - even in one person dies - I think that is too many. Can’t we just wait until we can pull over to a parking lot to make or return phone calls? I do believe that we are distracted by other things, i.e. food, drink, kids, animals. But I believe when we get behind the wheel, we need to feel like airline pilots are supposed to feel: we should have no distractions and pay attention only to that which we are doing - driving. We need to take that responsibility more seriously. I don’t know if a new law could get passed - but we need to voluntarily stop using our devices and other distractions while driving. I am guilty of this, too, and I plan to stop talking on my cell phone unless I am pulled over in a parking lot. Pulling off to the side of the road can be just as dangerous as talking on a cell phone.
I hope you have a productive and stress-free week.
Go to your happy place.
See you next week!
