What’s Left?

As I sit here writing this column, it is snowing - ever so lightly - outside. Weird. Dec. 6th and we have a little snow. That is very early for us here. We had about 7 inches of rain Sunday and Monday - just think if that was snow. Isn’t it 3-5 inches of snow for every inch of water …so 15-35” of snow?! That would be incredible. I would hate it but then again, it would be beautiful.

Well - I stopped this column Tuesday night and now it is Wednesday morning. There is a 1-2” blanket of snow on grassy areas, bushes, trees and cars. It’s really pretty but you can tell as soon as the sun comes out, it will be gone. But it is beautiful and I believe it is one of our earliest snows ever. Will have to look that up. Certainly puts you in the Christmas spirit.

Speaking of Christmas spirit, my mom is something of a timer queen - you know - she uses light timers on everything. Personally, I can’t usually keep the one on my aquarium working. But at our house we have all kinds of lights, coffee pots, etc. on timers. Well, the other day, we were at a big box hardware store (HD) and they had timers - just $4.95 each. I thought - “what a deal!” Anyway, we bought two and my mom put them on her Christmas tree and the other one on something else. Well, the next day - which was yesterday, she says, “those timers don’t work!” She said that her Christmas tree came on and off at will all through the night. She even got up once and turned the timer off - but then a few minutes later - it snapped back on again. It’s kind of like those candles that you blow out on a birthday cake and then they light back up. Now, I don’t know what (HD) will do when we take these back - but they just need to re-package them as gag gifts and they will probably sell out. It’s actually pretty funny when you think about it - getting up at all times of the night to turn your tree off, again and again, and again. Granted, after the first time I would have unplugged the whole thing.  In fact, in the morning, when I get up too early and beat the timer for the coffee  - I just unplug the timer and turn the coffee maker on - which makes my mom mad because she has to reset the timer. But I find I can’t do anything very complicated when I first get up. Turning the coffee maker on pretty much sums it up for awhile.
