Well, because of circumstances somewhat beyond my control, I waited 8 days - really 7 - after the opening of the 4th Pirates movie to go see it. I saw it last Saturday night in Cabot. I got there late (big surprise) and it was 3D - which I really didn’t know it was going to be - so they gave me the big glasses to wear. Of course, since I was late to the 7:25 p.m. movie, I had to sit on the 2nd or 3rd row - which I generally like to do - but with 3D it is really better to sit more in the middle of the theater. I kept taking my glasses off to see if it looked better with them off or on. With them off, everything was blurry - or as we say if it looks that way in the newspaper - it is off registration. Anyway, it was fine with the glasses on. I hadn’t worn 3D glasses since I was about 16 and they were one red lens and one blue lens and made of cardboard and you got to take them home with you if you wanted. Boy - it’s come a long way since then. I did have to give the glasses back. They were like real glasses and were fine. I can’t say that I enjoyed the movie anymore with the 3D than I would have without it but maybe it was because I was really a little too close. I wondered when I walked into the theater why the first 3-5 rows had no one sitting there and all the other rows were packed. (Kind of reminded when I wandered into the same thing at Sea World). At least this time - I didn’t get all wet.
On to the movie. I would have loved it if Johnny Depp had just walked out in his pirate get-up with the ocean in the background  and given a few good one-liners. But the new female star, Penelope Cruz, was pretty good in it and the storyline was pretty good. As usual, the scenery - island and ocean - were beautiful as it was mostly filmed in Oahu, Hawaii. And, just like some - if not all- of the other Pirate movies, you got a little inkling of what might be to come in the next movie sequel if you waited through the 10-minutes of credits at the end of the show to see one last scene. I did this - even though no one had told me something had been tacked on - because I remembered from the last movie that they had done this. It was me, a guy and his date and four clean-up people from the movie that were in there when the credits finished and the last scene came up. I’m not going to spoil it for you - or oversell it. It was not world shattering but it was interesting. So, if you haven’t seen it yet or you are going to see it again, you might want to wait and see the last scene.
Every time I see one of the Pirate movies, I plan on remembering some of the funny one-liners that “Jack” (Johnny Depp) says, but usually - and again true this time - I can’t remember. But, I guess that is good because I will enjoy them again when I see it for the next several times. It’s just a thing with me. After all - it’s summer and summer means watching meaningless movies and just relaxing and having fun!
Hope you have a great summer.
Go to your happy place (Pirate movie 4)!
See you next week!
