One of the television shows that I like to watch each week is  Raising Hope. I had to analyze why I like the show because it is pretty unusual. It’s a story about a lower middle class (or maybe upper lower class) family who live in the wife’s  mother’s home and take care of her (Cloris Leachman) as she has dementia or maybe Alzheimers.  The family consists of a mom (Virginia), dad (Bert), one son (Jimmy), the son’s new baby (Hope)  and Leachman (Maw Maw). They are always getting into some sort of weird situation. But one thing I have figured out about the show that attracts me is that the son loves his baby daughter so much and his parents, upon reflection, weren’t the textbook parents when he was growing up.
Did I tell you how he got the daughter? Well, it seems he, uncharacteristically, hooked up for one night with a woman who turned out to be a serial killer. After she was captured and sent to prison, Jimmy found out that she was pregnant  and had had a baby in prison - that was his baby. The serial killer was sent to the electric chair and the son was given the (his) baby. So each episode involves Jimmy learning how to raise a baby. It does not glorify having a baby out of wedlock and it does show the things Jimmy has to give up now that he is a dad. But the best part of the show is how it portrays how much Jimmy loves his little Hope. I think that is a good thing to show young men. And it’s funny! It comes on Tuesday night on Fox - of course.
Go to your happy place!
See you next week.
